Solar farms are missing out on up to 25% of energy generation due to overheating of PV panels (reaching 80°C). We developed a smart material coating that increases the PV panels' power output and extends their lifetime. A&B Smart Materials introduces a novel smart hydrogel material that passively cools any surface it is applied to (patent pending). The material is sprayed on the back of solar panels and increases their efficiency. The hydrogel absorbs atmospheric water at night and releases it through evaporation during the day, cooling the solar panel during operating times. Overall, our solution has no maintenance, requires no energy consumption, has a low start-up cost, is economically viable, and has a huge target market. Our novel material also has many other domains of applications: EV battery and electronic component cooling, cosmetics, and specialized textiles. The company is based at the University of Oxford Begbroke Science Park.
