Position title: Electronics Engineer_ Lead

Reports to: Electronic Engineer Manager

Position summary:

As a Lead Engineer in the Electronics team, you will own the electronics and electrical design of one or more subsystems within our products, from requirements and architecture, through prototyping and verification, to production release. You will lead and support team members, influencing cross-functional decisions with quality, regulatory, operations and clinical specialists to turn system and product needs into designs that are safe, compliant, manufacturable and serviceable. This is hands-on engineering in a regulated environment: your documents and designs form part of the technical file for equipment used in the treatment of cancer.

Relevant Knowledge and Skill requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in electronics/electrical engineering.
  • 12+ years' experience in electrical/electronics development of medical products.
  • Track record of ownership of a minimum of two products through to production release.
  • Demonstrable skills in the design of electronics and electrical systems, schematic capture, PCB layout, engineering verification and production handover.
  • Strong analogue, digital, power and mixed signal electronics design; able to justify design decisions with analysis and simulation.
  • Contributes to risk management, hazard analysis and FMEA; translates risk controls into design decisions.
  • Works within a design control system: design inputs and outputs, traceability, formal design review, and change control via ECR/ECO.
  • Designs to meet regulatory standards; working knowledge of IEC 60601-1.
  • Practical understanding of designing to comply with EMC standards, supporting EMC test campaigns and resolving failures.
  • Writes design specifications, engineering test specifications and technical reports.
  • Applies design for test, manufacture and serviceability as a design input.
  • Works effectively with suppliers, contract manufacturers and external test houses.
  • Explains technical reasoning and risk clearly to engineers, project managers and non-specialists.

Key responsibilities

Design ownership

  • Own the electronics and electrical design for one or more subsystems, from requirements through to production release.
  • Define subsystem requirements and interfaces with mechanical, software and systems engineering.
  • Lead, identify, debug and perform engineering verification of new hardware; document and resolve issues found in development, verification, EMC testing and manufacturing.
  • Evaluate technologies and components against cost, risk, supply and regulatory criteria, and make a reasoned recommendation on adoption.

Documentation and change control

  • Create and maintain electronics and electrical designs and documentation, including schematics, PCB layouts, manufacturing data, design descriptions and engineering test reports.
  • Own changes to your designs through the change control process, including impact assessment and re-verification.

Review and risk

  • Chair and contribute to design reviews, and act as a competent reviewer on other engineers' designs.
  • Contribute to the product risk management file: identify hazards, define and verify the electronic risk controls, and keep the analysis current as the design changes.
  • Identify, evaluate and escalate technical and project risks early, with a proposed mitigation.

Suppliers and product lifecycle

  • Work directly with suppliers, contract manufacturers and external test houses to resolve technical queries and review their output.
  • Provide engineering support across the product lifecycle: investigate non-conformances and field issues, support CAPA, and manage component obsolescence.

Process and people

  • Work within the company's engineering and quality processes, and contribute to improving them.
  • Keep current with relevant standards and industry practice, and bring that knowledge into the team.
  • Provide day-to-day people support to junior and mid-level engineers by coordinating work, setting expectations, coaching through problems, reviewing their work, providing constructive feedback and supporting their technical and professional development.
  • Lead and support team members within Electronics while influencing across functions, building alignment with mechanical, software, systems, quality, regulatory, operations and clinical teams to resolve issues and support sound engineering decisions.
